The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy sería como La guía del viajero a la galaxia, el cual no deja de ser un nombre original y hasta divertido. Y es que toda la idea de Douglas Adams es divertida. Imagínense al protagonista de la novela que descubre, cuando es destruida, que la tierra fue en realidad una gigante supercomputadora, creada por otra computadora, para dar respuesta a la última pregunta sobre la vida y el universo, casi filosófico. Y después de encontrar la respuesta, “42”, se construye otra computadora para saber cuál era la pregunta.

 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy es una comedia de ciencia ficción creada por Douglas Adams. Originalmente fue emitida por la BBC en 1978 y después adaptada a otros formatos, incluyendo shows, novelas, libros de comics, una serie de TV, un video juego y un film en 2005.

La primera serie en radio proviene de una propuesta llamada "The Ends of the Earth": seis episodios, en el que todo termina con la tierra destruida de formas diferentes. Mientras escribía el primer episodio Adams se dio cuenta que necesitaba un ser extraterrestre para dar un contexto y que ese alien necesitaba una razón para estar allí. Finalmente decidió hacer al extraterrestre como un investigador para un libro llamado The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Al progresar el primer episodio la Guía se convirtió en el centro de la historia y decidió enfocar la serie en ella, con la destrucción de la tierra como la única idea inamovible.

Adams contó que el titulo llegó de un incidente en 1971 cuando viajaba por Europa con una copia del libro Hitch-hiker's Guide to Europe. Mientras yacía ebrio en un campo cerca de Innsbruck (Austria) con una copia del libro y mirando las estrellas le pareció buena idea que alguien escribiera una guía del universo.

Sinopsis

Las diferentes versiones siguen el argumento básico pero son contradictorias en varios lugares ya que Adams reescribió la historia sustancialmente para cada nueva adaptación. En todas las versiones la serie sigue las aventuras de Arthur Dent, un desafortunado inglés después de la destrucción de la tierra por los Vogons (una raza de extraterrestres desagradables y burocráticos) para dar lugar a una autopista intergaláctica. Las aventuras de Dent se entrecruzan con las de otros personajes: Ford Prefect (un alienígena e investigador que salva a Dent de la destrucción de la tierra), Zaphod Beeblebrox (el excéntrico semi-primo de Ford y el presidente galáctico que ha robado la Heart of Gold, una nave equipada con Infinite Improbability Drive), el deprimido robot Marvin the Paranoid Android, y Trillian, una mujer que Arthur alguna vez conoció en una fiesta en Islington y que es la otra sobreviviente de la destrucción.

En sus viajes Arthur descubre que la tierra fue en realidad una gigante supercomputadora, creada por otra computadora, Deep Thought. Deep Thought había sido construida por sus creadores para dar la respuesta a la "Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything", que después de “eons” de cálculos fue dada como simplemente “42”. Deep Thought después fue instruida para diseñar la supercomputadora para determinar cuál es la pregunta en realidad. La tierra fue destruida por los Vogons momentos antes que los cálculos fueran completados y Arthur se convierte en el objetivo de los descendientes de los creadores de Deep Thought, en la creencia que su mente debe tener la pregunta. Con la ayuda de sus amigos Arthur escapa y ellos deciden almorzar en el Restaurante al Final del Universo, antes de embarcarse en otras aventuras.

… The house stood on a slight rise just on the edge of the village. It stood on its own and looked over a broad spread of West Country farmland. Not a remarkable house by any means--it was about thirty years old, squattish, squarish, made of brick, and had four windows set in the front of a size and proportion which more or less exactly failed to please the eye.

The only person for whom the house was in any way special was Arthur Dent, and that was only because it happened to be the one he lived in. He had lived in it for about three years, ever since he had moved out of London because it made him nervous and irritable. He was about thirty as well, dark haired and never quite at ease with himself. The thing that used to worry him most was the fact that people always used to ask him what he was looking so worried about. He worked in local radio which he always used to tell his friends was a lot more interesting than they probably thought. It was, too--most of his friends worked in advertising.

It hadn't properly registered with Arthur that the council wanted to knock down his house and build a bypass instead.

At eight o'clock on Thursday morning Arthur didn't feel very good. He woke up blearily, got up, wandered blearily round his room, opened a window, saw a bulldozer, found his slippers, and stomped off to the bathroom to wash.

Toothpaste on the brush--so. Scrub.

Shaving mirror--pointing at the ceiling. He adjusted it. For a moment it reflected a second bulldozer through the bathroom window. Properly adjusted, it reflected Arthur Dent's bristles. He shaved them off, washed, dried, and stomped off to the kitchen to find something pleasant to put in his mouth.

Kettle, plug, fridge, milk, coffee. Yawn…

The word bulldozer wandered through his mind for a moment in search of something to connect with.

The bulldozer outside the kitchen window was quite a big one.

He stared at it.

"Yellow," he thought and stomped off back to his bedroom to get dressed.

Passing the bathroom he stopped to drink a large glass of water, and another. He began to suspect that he was hung over. Why was he hung over? Had he been drinking the night before? He supposed that he must have been. He caught a glint in the shaving mirror. "Yellow," he thought and stomped on to the bedroom.

He stood and thought. The pub, he thought. Oh dear, the pub. He vaguely remembered being angry, angry about something that seemed important. He'd been telling people about it, telling people about it at great length, he rather suspected: his clearest visual recollection was of glazed looks on other people's faces. Something about a new bypass he had just found out about. It had been in the pipeline for months only no one seemed to have known about it. Ridiculous. He took a swig of water.
