El Virginiano. Un vaquero de la pradera

Algo atraía a los pasajeros a la ventana, por lo que me levanté y crucé para ver lo que era. Vi cerca de la pista un recinto, y alrededor de él algunos hombres riendo, y dentro de él un poco de polvo, y en medio del polvo algunos caballos corriendo. Eran cow ponis en un corral, y uno de ellos no podía ser capturado. Teníamos un montón de tiempo para ver este deporte, pues nuestro tren se había detenido para cargar agua en el tanque junto a la plataforma de la estación de Medicine Bow. Estábamos con seis horas de retraso, y hambrientos de entretenimiento.  El poni en el corral era inteligente, y rápido de patas. 

El Buen Soldado, Síntesis

La novela de Ford Madox Ford comienza con “Esta es la historia más triste que he escuchado”, e inicia, con su estructura deliberadamente confusa, recordando los momentos sin un orden cronológico y flashes del pasado. El Buen Soldado cuenta la historia de dos parejas aparentemente perfectas que se encuentran por primera vez en un spa en Alemania a comienzos del siglo XX.

El esposo reflexiona sobre su vida, la de su esposa, y una pareja amiga, con la que viajan, comparten y disfrutan momentos de la vida. De acuerdo al narrador, John Dowell, las dos parejas se complementan en todo. “Éramos como un barco macizo que iba a todas partes, sabíamos que queríamos”, continúa el narrador.

The Good Soldier, Florence

It was, of course, poor dear Florence who wanted to go to Las Tours. You are to imagine that, however much her bright personality came from Stamford, Connecticut, she was yet a graduate of Poughkeepsie. I never could imagine how she did it—the curious, talkative person that she was. With the far-away look in her eyes holding up one hand as if she wished to silence any objection—or any comment for the matter of that—she would talk. She would talk about William the Silent, about Gustave the Loquacious, about Paris frocks, about how the poor dressed in 1337, about Fantin-Latour, about the Paris-Lyons-Mediterranée train-deluxe, about whether it would be worth while to get off at Tarascon and go across the suspension-bridge, over the Rhone to take another look at Beaucaire.

The Good Soldier, Morals

I don't know; was that last remark of hers the remark of a harlot, or is it what every decent woman, county family or not county family, thinks at the bottom of her heart? Or thinks all the time for the matter of that? Who knows?

Yet, if one doesn't know that at this hour and day, at this level of civilization to which we have attained, after all the preachings of all the moralists, and all the teachings of all the mothers to all the daughters in saecula saeculorum... but perhaps that is what all mothers teach all daughters, not with lips but with the eyes, or with heart whispering to heart. And, if one doesn't know as much as that about the first thing in the world, what does one know and why is one here?

The Good Soldier, Breaking the Group

I swear to you that the breaking up of our little group was an unthinkable event. Supposing that you should come upon us sitting together at one of the little tables in front of the club house, let us say, at Homburg, taking tea of an afternoon and watching the miniature golf, you would have said that, as human affairs go, we were an extraordinarily safe castle. We were, if you will, one of those tall ships with the white sails upon a blue sea, one of those things that seem the proudest and the safest of all the beautiful and safe things that God has permitted the mind of men to frame. Where better could one take refuge? Where better?

El buen soldado

Esta es la historia más triste que jamás he oído. Habíamos conocido a los Ashburnhams por nueve temporadas de la ciudad de Nauheim con bastante intimidad. Undine

On a beautiful evening, many hundred years ago, a worthy old fisherman sat mending his nets. The spot where he dwelt was exceedingly picturesque. The green turf on which he had built his cottage ran far out into a great lake; and this slip of verdure appeared to stretch into it as much through love of its clear waters as the lake, moved by a like impulse, strove to fold the meadow, with its waving grass and flowers, and the cooling shade of the trees, in its embrace of love. They seemed to be drawn toward each other, and the one to be visiting the other as a guest.

Little Women, In Easier English

Las hermanas discuten qué le regalaran a mamá. Se acerca Navidad y recuerdan los regalos que solían recibir, las experiencias pasadas. Cada una le regalará algo. Tambien se decide ensayar la obra que presentarán aunque algunas ya no sienten que deban continuar.

Little Women

Little Women (Mujercitas) trata sobre la vida de las hermanas March durante la Guerra Civil en los Estados Unidos. Alguna vez disfrutaron de un buen pasar pero ahora deben realizar tareas humildes para ganarse unas monedas. Leemos algunos párrafos en inglés donde las hermanas discuten sobre sus maneras y formas de ser.

Little Women es una novela de la escritora norteamericana Louisa May Alcott (1832–1888).

Originalmente se publicó en dos volúmenes en 1868 y 1869. Alcott escribió el libro a lo largo de varios meses a pedido de su editor. La historia sigue las vidas de cuatro hermanas y detalla el pasaje de las hermanas de niñas a mujeres. Ligeramente basada en la vida de la autora y de sus tres hermanas se clasifica como una novela autobiográfica.

Mujercitas

En estos párrafos las hermanas se quejan de la falta de dinero y recuerdan cuanto disfrutaban cuando tenían de todo. Son tiempos de guerra y la madre piensa que deben hacer un sacrificio y donar sus ahorros para la causa. De Louisa May Alcott, Mujercitas

Averiguamos un poco de Undine y Sintran, un libro que se menciona en Mujercitas, y que era muy popular en la época.

Robinson Crusoe

Donde Robinson Crusoe cuenta de su deseo de aventuras y de los consejos de su padre. Robinson Crusoe es una novela de Daniel Defoe, publicada en 1.719.

El título original es The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, of York, Mariner: Who lived Eight and Twenty Years, all alone in an un-inhabited Island on the Coast of America, near the Mouth of the Great River of Oroonoque; Having been cast on Shore by Shipwreck, wherein all the Men perished but himself. With An Account how he was at last as strangely deliver'd by Pyrates. Written by Himself.
